Why Attention to Complete Streets Implementation Is So Important in Serving Historically Disadvantaged Communities
This article examines various ways in which transportation professionals are seeking to address mistakes of the past that have led to inequities in transportation policies, programs, and practices. The authors discuss the need to apply an “equity lens” as transportation planners and policy makers move to a more data-driven decision-making process. Complete-streets initiatives, including those of the Institute of Transportation Engineers Complete Streets Council, play a vital role in addressing ways to serve historically disadvantaged communities.
