Understanding discontinuance among California’s electric vehicle owners
For the market share of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) to achieve 100% of new vehicle sales, there is a need for PEV owners to continue choosing them in later vehicle purchases. Research has focused on the reasons for PEV purchase, but less has been performed on the reasons for the abandonment, or discontinuance, of PEV ownership. Based on results from five questionnaire surveys, the authors find that in California, PEV abandonment occurs at a rate of 20% for PEV owners and 18% for battery EV owners. Discontinuance is related to the lack of convenient vehicle charging facilities, lack of Level 2 (240-volt) charging at home, ownership of other non-electric vehicles, and owners' gender.
