THE BACK-YARD MECHANIC. PART 3. (OIL CHANGE AND LUBRICATION)
Changing the oil and filter every 3000 mi. is recommended for maximum engine protection. Advice is given on buying oil (quality, viscosity) and filters. It is pointed out that additives are not needed if a high-quality oil is used and changed regularly. Performing an oil change at home will not void a new-car warranty if oil and filters meet warranty requirements and the prescribed maintenance schedule is followed. Additional items needed for an oil change are listed, and an engine flush is recommended if the engine is dirty. Instructions are given for performing an oil change and associated under-the-car inspection of fluid levels (transmission, differential) including checking for leaks. Tips are provided on chassis lubrication for pre-1970 and newer model cars. Final touches include lubricating various parts, inspecting important items, tightening nuts and bolts, and disposing of the used oil (delivery in a sealed container to a service station recommended).
