HULL UNDERWRITING AND THE CHANGING TECHNOLOGY
The insurance underwriter is faced with serious challenges when rating a new ship or new system on a ship. Lack of experience with new and different ships must be related through crystal ball gazing to tried and true. Initially bad experiences, as with 3 early VLCC'S, can cause unusually high rates until problems are solved. Some ship features that are not normally found on all ships are outlined as suggestions for improving safe operation.
