NEW CONCEPTS FOR BULK CARGO VESSELS

This paper describes new concepts for bulk cargo vessels especially suitable for the transportation of hazardous cargoes either successfully operating or under serious consideration. It also states reasons why various new concepts are not at this time useful for carriage of bulk cargoes. The history, feasibility, overall design characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of concepts like barge-carrying systems, integrated tug/barge systems, submarine tankers, ice-breaking tankers, Delta ships and others are investigated. This paper is not meant to be a scientific research report, and no attempt is made to present engineering details of various designs. Even so, it is understood that any concept is only worthwhile if basic economic factors are investigated and found favorable. It is beyond the scope of this paper to investigate initial and operating cost, or the economic impact of ecology considerations which could be of some controversial nature. However, this paper endeavors to present an overall description of new concepts and provide an up-to-date summary of ideas and trends within the Marine Industry.
