TRENDS IN WORLD SHIPPING

The forecasts give a profile of U.S. and world trade and shipping in 1975, 1990 and 2005 for the following commodity groups and ship types: 1) breakbulk, 2) express (container, LASH), 3) dry bulk, 4) liquid bulk, 5) liquid natural gas--LNG (U.S. trade only to the year 1990). The principal hazardous commodities are shipped in liquid form. The liquid bulk forecasts given in this paper were not designed to look specifically at hazardous cargo but a breakout of hazardous, chemicals, liquid sulfur, and LNG is given. The forecasting methods used to make the trade projections, included trend analysis, interviews with commodity experts, correlation analysis, synthesis of other forecasts, and in-depth economic analysis of the supply and demand factors driving the movement of specific commodities. Thus the forecasts were made at a detailed level by specific commodities and, in some cases, specific trade routes. They are listed as references at the end of this paper.
