PHM GOES TO 400 HZ FOR SECONDARY POWER
In order to save weight and space, the U.S. Navy is going to a gas turbine secondary power system aboard the two lead ship PHM hydrofoil craft presently under construction. Two separate 200-KW auxiliary power units are being installed so if one is disabled the other can continue to carry the full load. The APU's will generate power at 400 Hertz, not 60 Hertz, as this will reduce the size and weight of system components. Advantages of the gas turbine system, as well as specifics of space and weight savings, and descriptions of associated equipment, are all given in the article.
