ANALYSIS OF THE POSSIBILITIES TO RATIONALIZE THE GOODS DISTRIBUTION THROUGH CO-ORDINATION. SUMMARY OF THE VART PROJECT

ANALYS AV MOEJLIGHETERNA ATT GENOM SAMORDNING RATIONALISERA VARUDISTRIBUTIONEN. SAMMANFATTNING AV VART-PROJEKTET

This project, the Vart project, has shown that it is possible to reduce the transportation costs through co-ordination of goods distribution in urban areas. The co-ordination concept proposed, involving collection by routes and delivery by routes with interlaying transfer terminals, is well-known and is already being applied to a certain extent, although in most cases it is underdeveloped. Since both buyers and sellers of transportation services would benefit from co-ordinated goods distribution, it is judged that market forces will influence development in the direction of more rational distribution. In this case, society can actively contribute to the kind of development desired by informing the parties concerned and also by ensuring in its planning that suitable sites for transfer terminals are available. Society should itself find co-ordinated goods distribution to be in its own interest since it also has great social economic value, offering as it does less traffic, less congestion, less noise, less pollution from exhaust fumes, fewer accidents and reduced energy consumption
