CAR TRAFFIC MOBILITY IN GOTHENBURG 1980-81

BILTRAFIKENS FRAMKOMLIGHET I GOETEBORG 1980-81

It is useful to note changes in traffic mobility on different roads. Journey time and speed are usually employed as indicators. Data are collected by a car equipped with a tacho analyser. The precision of measurements depends on the number of measurements and the variation in mobility at different times and days. Values have been based on 8-10 measurements which yield a confidence interval of about plus or minus 15%. The punched tape from the analyser can be directly fed into a computer. The information produced is distance-time diagrams, and journey time and mean speed for every road section. The number and length of stops are also recorded. During the 70's there has been a gradual shift of the maximum traffic period in the afternoon and an increase in the length of the heavy traffic period. Between 1976 and 1979 there was a distinct improvement in mobility owing to construction of several new roads and the end of traffic growth. In 1980/81 there was a further slight improvement. Between 1974 and 1981, the proportion of the road network where mobility is less than 20 kph decreased from 14% to 4%, and the proportion with speeds higher than 50 kph increased from 25% to 48%.
