INSURANCE ACCIDENTS IN THE COUNTY OF JAEMTLAND
FOERSAEKRINGSOLYCKOR I JAEMTLANDS LAEN
The work on traffic safety improvement measures is today exclusively based on data from police reported accidents. This report studies how the use of the notifications of damage on motor vehicles to the insurance companies can improve the basic data for the decision process of traffic safety measures. The notifications of damage to the insurance companies in the years 1978 and 1980 in the County of Jaemtland have been analysed. The result of the study shows that if the police reported accidents are complemented with insurance reported accidents the sum of the reported accidents is 4 times higher than before. The insurance reported accidents have a higher rate of accidents in the weekends than the police reported accidents. The insurance reported accidents have a different accident type distribution and are less serious than the police reported accidents. It seems that it is possible to determine the head accident type fairly accurately from the notification of damage. The greatest advantages with the use of insurance reported accidents in the work on traffic safety are the availability of more precise data when analysing the causes of the accident. It is important to notice the shortcoming of the insurance reported accidents because it is a subjective description of an event by a person who has his own profit to think about. (TRRL)
