INFORMATION AND CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR ROAD TRAFFIC. PART I: INFORMATION SYSTEMS AT ROAD WORKS

INFORMATIONS- OCH REGLERSYSTEM FOER VAEGTRAFIK. DEL I: INFORMATIONS- SYSTEM VID VAEGARBETEN

The aim of this project was to give an exposition of the information problems and to study the possibilities of providing the approaching drivers with more adequate information at road works, primarily on rural roads. To get a picture of the safety problems at road works, traffic accidents have been analyzed. They indicate that road works cause safety problems especially on high standard roads with high traffic flows. The drivers' need for information at road works and their ability to make use of it is of great importance for the design of the information system. When designing, it would be desirable to be able to classify occurring road works in groups with different characteristics. A proposal for a roadworks classification model has been made based on the following parameters: (1) reduction of traffic capacity, (2) extension of the work area, (3) visibility, (4) road standard. When presenting information methods at road works a division could be made concerning when and where the information is displayed: (1) information about road works in general, (2) advance information about a certain road work presented before and during the trip, (3) warnings in the vicinity of the road works. Different types of traffic control devices at road works have been tested in field studies, e.g. Sign colours and sizes, "floating arrow", visually narrowing road, speed dependent road signs, police presence, rumble strips and narrow lanes.
