AN ACCELERATED CORROSION TEST FOR BRAKE TUBING. COMPLEMENTARY INVESTIGATION
The aim of this report is to propose methods for testing the corrosion resistance of brake tubing which reflect normal exposure conditions. The investigated brake tubing materials consisted of double walled, copper-brazed carbon steel with four different coatings: (1) zinc, (2) terne, (3) zinc and epoxy, and (4) zinc and pvc. Stainless steel ss 2333, copper nickel 90/10 and phosphor deoxidized copper were also investigated. These materials were exposed to a well defined synthetic mixture of road mud with addition of 1.5 NaCl. The temperature was varied between 30 deg and 50 deg with 4 hours duration at each temperature and a high relative humidity of 95 plus or minus 3%. The tests were made with and without addition of 0.7 plus or minus 0.1 ppm SO2 to the atmosphere in the climate chamber. Tests made in the synthetic road mud were performed over a period of 90 days and tests made in neutral salt spray endured 120 days. The following conclusions have been drawn: (1) the test method with synthetic road mud and addition of SO2 gives results in accord with practical experience as regards life of the materials and type of corrosion attack, (2) the method appears to be well suited for testing the corrosion resistance, (3) if SO2 is excluded, the type of corrosion attack is altered and there is a great spread of test values, and (4) tests in neutral salt spray and acetic acid salt spray yield results which correspond poorly to practical experience.
