Evaluation of Rust Spots on an Airport Runway
Asphalt pavement is defined as “A high-quality, thoroughly controlled, engineered mixture made by heating asphalt cement and mixing it with aggregates and mineral fillers or by using cold/warm bituminous/asphalt concrete mix or recycled asphalt concrete mix. Aggregate, the major component of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) or Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA), refers to a mixture of particles, sized in specific proportions of dimensions within a mixed batch of HMA/CMA, consisting of hard, inert mineral materials, such as crushed rock or stone (e.g., limestone), gravel, and sand. The load bearing performance is greatly determined by the proportions of particle size contained in the typical HMA/CMA mix formula. Newly built or rehabilitated airport runway should last for many years however some surfaces show early cosmetic damage which may lead to structural damage too in the due course of time. In the presence of oxygen and moisture, pyrite oxidation can take place, which can eventually lead to pavement damage. This paper provides a brief insight of a study carried out by the authors to investigate the formation of rust spots on an airport runway in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements. Physical properties of the source aggregates were evaluated and the ferrous contamination of aggregates was also evaluated. The effect and causes of ferrous particle (pyrite) contamination in naturally occurring aggregate is also discussed in this study. In this study a new testing method was developed to check the ferrous contamination of naturally occurring aggregates so as to avoid such rust spot formation on HMA surfaces. Remedial measures are also discussed in the paper
