CONCRETE HINGES

The report presents a state-of-the-art review of the design and analysis of reinforced concrete hinges for use in bridge construction. The report, commissioned by the Department of Transport, was motivated by the intention to revise current design of hinges to make them compatible with the limit state format of the bridge design code BS 5400. The revision also provides an opportunity to widen the scope of the design guide, at present restricted to the freyssinet hinge design which only allows rotation about one axis. The design review is presented under the following headings: types of concrete hinges; current design methods; limit state design requirements for hinges; ultimate bearing strength; moment/rotation characteristics under short-term loading; serviceability - short term behaviour; effects of long term and repeated loadings; shear resistance; detailing; caquot hinges; possible revision of BE5/75; and, proposals for experimental research.
