STRESS PULSES PROPAGATED AS A RESULT OF THE RAPID GROWTH OF BRITTLE FRACTURE

The field of the interrelation of stress wave propagation and brittle fracture is one in which many advances have been made in recent years. A study of the pulses produced by growing fracture surfaces, that is presented in the paper, in addition to being a challenging field for problems in theoretical elasticity, gives some insight into the nature of crack propagation, and the stress fields in the region of running cracks. This is an area which requires considerably more experimental work, which should be tied very closely with parallel theoretical investigations in the theory of elasticity and plasticity of solids.
