An Alternative Mounting System Concept for Improved NVH for a 3-Cylinder Power Train
This paper presents a proposal for an improved mounting system design for a 3-cylinder power train (PT) (a PT here is by definition an engine plus an end on transmission). The dynamics of such a PT are complex and present real challenges on how to mount such a unit into a passenger vehicle to achieve acceptable levels of refinement. The paper first discusses the fundamental characteristics of the PT excitation. The paper then leads on to analyze the dynamic output for what is considered the “industry standard” mounting system. Comparisons are then made using similar output, for the alternative mounting system. Bespoke software is used that employs simple “rigid body theory” that prevents the need for using time-consuming finite element models.
