FOR YOUR SAFETY
This brochure is designed to demonstrate the many safety programs developed by transit systems both independently and collectively through the American Public Transit Association. The section on selected safety programs at bus and rail transit systems is only a sample of the scope, variety, and success of these programs. Each of these transit authorities has a comprehensive safety program covering all aspects of transit service--the specific program identified is part of that comprehensive effort. In addition to the safety activities carried out by each transit system individually, there exists a mechanism through which safety priorities of national concern are addressed. This mechanism is APTA. APTA provides the role of coordinator for many safety activities which could not be carried out otherwise. It is the focal point for dealing with the federal government on safety issues, and provides a communication link to federal agencies involved in transit safety.
