EFFECTS OF PILE ROUGHNESS OF WAVE FORCES ON PILES
The objective of this study, was to gain further insight into the nature and magnitude of the effects of pile surface roughness on wave forces on piles. The experimental procedure involved subjecting a circular cylindrical model pile, with different degrees of surface roughness, to monochromatic waves having a range of heights and periods. The resulting force, moment, and water surface time-histories were measured for a constant mean water depth. The force, roughness, and surface elevation data were being analyzed in the manner that best indicated the effects of surface roughness. Theoretical considerations are examined and a description of the experimental procedures and equipment are summarized. Based on this study, the authors report that is is probable that the increase in maximum force for prototype piles achieving a reasonable degree of surface roughness can be expected to be in excess of 24 percent.
