REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE OF ROAD SURFACINGS

LAGNING OCH UNDERHAALL AV BELAEGGNINGAR

Repairs to pavements should concentrate on damage which detracts from traffic safety. Repairs which will extend the life of the pavement and raise comfort have a lower priority. At present there are too many asphalt works and a number will probably close down, which means that haulage costs will rise. The object of this survey was to review methods and materials used, and calculate repair costs. The following recommendations are made: (1) where possible, use grouted macadam combined with blinding instead of coated macadam; (2) when using coated macadam, spread by hand for patches up to 10 M 2 in size, and use a grader or layton spreader for larger patches; (3) in conjunction with blinding, use a bituminous emulsion tanker and spread blinding gravel by hand up to 10 M 2, and use a combined spreader for larger patches. Mastic asphalt is strong but expensive for patching. Fine cold asphalt should only be used in exceptional cases. Estimated labour costs are as follows: coated macadam by hand, SEK 592/H; by grader SEK 883/h; by Layton SEK 700/h; blinding with tanker, SEK 230/H; with combined spreader, SEK 884/h. Mastic asphalt, SEK 210/h. Fine cold asphalt, SEK 115/H. (TRRL)
