TRAFFIC ACCIDENT TRENDS

TRAFIKOLYCKSUTVECKLINGEN

In 1980 there were 848 fatal road accidents, 8.4% less than in 1979. 133 pedestrians were killed, 25.3% less than in 1979; almost half were over 65; 2/3 of accidents occurred during October-March. Number holding driving licences was almost 4.3 M. Deliveries of petrol dropped by 3.3% in relation to 1979. Reduction in accidents can therefore partly be attributed to drop in vehicle mileage. Number of vehicles at end of 1980 was 2.88 M cars, 182000 lorries and 13000 buses. 544000 vehicles were laid up at end of 1980. In the summer of 1980 there were 56000 motor cycles registered, but 43000 were laid up. This represents a rise of 20% in relation to 1979, of the same order as the rise in number of motor cyclists killed and injured. Number killed per population dropped by 26% over 1960-1980. This trend is even more favourable when related to number of vehicles and petrol delivered. The risk of being killed in a car is 13 times that in manufacturing industry. For moped riders the figure is 50, for light motorcycle riders 280, and heavy motorcycle riders 600. (TRRL)
