THE DESIGN OF AN OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING JACK-UP PLATFORM

The design of a Jack-Up type platform for offshore oil drilling is analyzed. The first part of this report contains a brief discussion of the general design considerations for the major areas of concern in the preliminary design stage. In the following, is included a discussion of the environmental factors that influence the design. To assist the designer, the analysis of the main characteristics of existing Jack-Up platforms is performed, developing correlations among different parameters of the structure. The second part of the report contains the preliminary design of a platform of this kind required by ENAP, a Chilean State Owned Oil Company. Calculations are performed for: the sizing of the hull and legs of the platform; the estimating of wind and current forces acting on the structure; and the prediction of heave and pitch motions of the hull while afloat.
