THE EFFECT OF SPECTRAL FORMATION AND SWELL ON SHIP RESPONSES USING A COMPUTER AIDED METHOD TO DETERMINE SEAWAY STATISTICS
A review of the background and current literature for deep ocean wave spectrum energy-density formulations is presented. An evaluation of how the choice of spectral formulation may affect the ship responses over the range of sea states observed in the North Atlantic (data taken from Hogben & Lumb) for a particular shipping route (Rotterdam to New York) was made. The choice of spectral formulation does not appear to significantly change the results. A method of including swell in the sea spectrum is presented. The swell contribution is made for a particular frequency and direction range of the energy in the spectrum based on the significant wave height and period of the swell at a decay distance, D, from its source. A computer program for calculating seaway statistics and ship responses over an arbitrary shipping is presented in the Appendix.
