BALLASTING CONDITIONS FOR PRODUCT TANKERS
A design methodology to determine the most favorable ballast load condition of a product tanker is presented. Emphasis is upon economical and safe operation. The procedure is applied to a 58,926 dwt tanker operating in the North Atlantic. Ocean wave statistics of the route are obtained from Hogben and Lumb and used in conjunction with the MIT five degree of freedom computer program to predict the seakeeping behavior of the vessel. The effect upon performance characteristics is investigated for variations of displacement and trim. These characteristics include: 1) calm water resistance; 2) shear and bending moment distributions along the hull; 3) mean added resistance in waves; 4) bow accelerations; and 5) seakeeping events: deck wetness, propeller racing, slamming.
