PAM 80--PUBLIC ATTITUDE MONITOR, 1980 ATTITUDES OF THE PUBLIC TOWARD AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE

The All-Industry Research Advisory Council (AIRAC) of the property and casualty insurance industry is inaugurating with this report a series of annual surveys to monitor trends in the public's attitudes toward the industry, particularly as they relate to issues of public policy. The American Council of Life Insurance (ACLI) invited AIRAC to share sponsorship of ACLI's 1980 survey and to insert a series of questions into its questionnaire. ACLI has generously allowed AIRAC to compare 1980 results with its earlier surveys where appropriate. The AIRAC/ACLI 1980 survey is based on a sample of 1,549 in-home interviews of adults age 18 and over. These adults were sampled using area probability methods, with the non-metropolitan area sampled at half the expected rate. Weighting methods were used to adjust for this and other kinds of under-sampling. The percentages and averages in the tables are based on weighted figures. The numbers of cases given in each table are unweighted to allow the reader to judge how large the sample or sub-sample was. The result is a sample that is theoretically representative of the non-institutionalized adult population of the contiguous United States. More details on the sampling and on statistical reliability related to sample size are given in the technical appendix. Data referred to in the text but not shown in the tables are available upon request.
