THE ISOLATION OF OIL FROM SEAWATER BALLAST IN COMPENSATED TANKS USING IMPERMEABLE MEMBRANES
An investigation of the possible application of impermeable membranes in compensated fuel and cargo tanks has been completed. The study included an experimental investigation utilizing a model tank with operational membranes and a theoretical investigation of the tensions in membranes for various practical situations. The program has indicated that there are several operational problems with membranes in compensated tanks. Probably the most serious problems noted during the study were associated with flexing and continual movement of the membrane in a seaway.
