PUTTING THE BRAKES ON DRUNK DRIVING
This paper briefly explains and discusses the following: (1) The Alliance for Traffic Safety; (2) Steps needed beyond legislation; and (3) From a researcher's viewpoint, effective and ineffective programs to handle the drunk driving problem. It is concluded that the best approach to reducing impaired driving is a local program containing the following elements: (1) Identify the alcohol crash risk; (2) Select risk management strategies and tactics and allocate resources; (3) Implement risk management actions; and (4) Evaluate outcomes in terms of risk reduction.
