ROAD ACCIDENTS GREAT BRITAIN 1977
The statistics of accidents and casualties in this publication are compiled from reports submitted by the Police to the Department of Transport and to the Scottish Development Department. Reports are now made in a standard form for all accidents involving personal injury. The form that had been in use since 1959 was discontinued at the end of 1968, being replaced by a revised version with many new items on accident circumstances such as weather, street lighting, and occurrence of jack-knifing. The index numbers of traffic quoted in the tables are based on estimates of vehicle mileage made by the Department of Transport and its Transport and Road Research Laboratory from traffic counts. From 1974 the census method underlying the count of the stock of licensed vehicles has been changing as vehicle records have gradually been transferred from local taxation offices to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre. Consequently stock figures from 1974 to 1978 are not comparable. No census results are available for 1977. The 1978 census was obtained from a full count at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre on 30 June 1978. The series will eventually be based on the count of licensed vehicles as at 31 December. The population figures quoted, or used, in the tables are mid year estimates unless otherwise stated.
