A SECOND GENERATION SYSTEM FOR THE REGISTRATION OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN HOLLAND

EEN TWEEDE GENERATIE-SYSTEEM VOOR DE VERKEERSONGEVALLENREGISTRATIE IN NEDERLAND

Since 1975 the countrywide and uniform registration of traffic accidents have been processed by the Department of Dutch State Registration of Road Traffic Accidents. An evaluation showed the apparent need for a second generation of the registration system. The research centre for physical planning has carried out a test of a new system based on a segmented geographic base file they had constructed for the city of Eindhoven. They developed a spatial oriented information system that, as a computerized tool provides primary types of information to local, regional and national authorities: site-location and manoeuvre listings, site-selection procedures, statistical analysis with other data sources, and mapping facilities. Earlier difficulties have been overcome and extra facilities are now provided, especially the automatic preparation of multi-purpose pin or flag marked maps. This system has been proposed by the VOR as the second generation system for traffic accidents registration. The method is described in this paper.
