WORK LOCATION AND MODAL CHOICE

WERKLOCATIE EN VERVOERSWIJZEKEUZE

When does somebody who has a car available for the journey to work choose public transport? Two of the many factors involved are the distance from home to the departure-stop and the distance from the arrival-stop to the working place. The first factor advocates for high density of dwellings around public transport stops, as has been done in the last years in many reports on local, regional and national planning. The second factor would rather give priority to high density of working places. From the many research results that have been gathered in this literature study it appears that (1) home-departure stop distance has hardly any influence on the choice between car and public transport, (2) the distance from arrival stop to the working place has an important influence on this choice. So the conclusion of this study is that in order to stimulate the use of public transport for the journey to work by workers who have a car available, we should rather plan working-places around (important) public transport stops than dwellings. When offices are considered, the fact that the working place density can be much higher that the labour density makes this preference even stronger. (a) (TRRL)
