ADVANCED DIESEL ELECTRIC BUS
A hybrid electric bus is being prepared to enter revenue service in the Greater Manchester inner city fleet after extensive testing by the designers and the operator. A maximum of 14 such vehicles will provide crosstown service on a 2.65-mile loop between the city's two major railroad stations through a heavily congested area. Power for the 21-ft vehicle is provided by a 30-kw diesel-electric power plant coupled to a hydraulic pump with a similar sized hydraulic motor driving through a conventional differential. Two battery packs of 70 amp hr capacity are also installed. Control is through the hydraulic pump which is also used for regenerative braking. Diesel engine can power the pump with any surplus for battery charging; when stationary the generator charges the batteries. Engine and battery power can be combined for acceleration.
