A SULFUR-LIQUID HYDROCARBON SLURRY FOR TRANSPORT THROUGH A PIPELINE IS PREPARED

A sulfur-liquid hydrocarbon slurry for transport through a pipeline is prepared by (1) injecting 1-20% of molten sulfur into a liquid hydrocarbon carrier, (2) concentrating the resulting slurry by settling and separating the liquid hydrocarbon, (3) using separated hydrocarbon as a base for making a new batch of sulfur slurry, (4) mixing the concentrated slurry with the dilute slurry formed in step (3) to form a slurry having a higher sulfur content than the slurry in step (2), and (5) repeating steps (1) through (4) until a slurry having a sulfur content of at least 30% is obtained. Preferably, the carrier is a petroleum oil, and fresh oil is added to the concentrated slurry in step (2). A corrosion inhibitor may also be added.
