RAIL TRANSIT 1982: A POLITICAL AND TECHNICAL CHALLENGE
Two major challenges confronting the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority are identified as (1) improving the communication and decision-making processes for a complex coalition of governments, a transit board and transit management, and (2) promoting ridership. Operating and maintaining the complex rail/bus network is complicated further by the simultaneous rail construction which will make that system grow from the present 40 to over 70 miles in the next three years. Described are the automated information system for passengers, computerized scheduling, an energy-management program, standardization of maintenance practices and inventories, centralized control and monitoring of Metrorail, and (in a separate box) the WMATA procedures for measuring rail wear and transposing rail.
