It has become necessary to purchase new multiple units for the Berlin rapid transit system. A concept has been chosen which is characterized by aluminum lightweight construction, chopper control technique and electric regenerative braking. A description is given of the EMU class' 270 construction of the mechanical and electrical part. This also includes the operational demands and their realization.
