A sumbarine pipeline is laid from a barge or the like which pays out a string of initially horizontal pipe by calculating the minimum radius of curvature for the pipe within the elastic bending stress limits; determining the induced axial force necessary to maintain it in a bending radius greater than the minimum; securing the pipeline on the floor of the body of water; clamping the pipe to a stationary support on the barge; engaging the pipe with a horizontally movable second support braked against movement with respect to the barge by a force equal to the axial tension force; disengaging the stationary support; moving the barge away from the anchorage approximately the stroke distance of the braking device; stopping the barge; re-engaging the stationary support; disengaging the second movable support; and returning the movable support to a starting position.
