CONTROLLER THAT'S ALWAYS ONE MOVE AHEAD

A Zilog z80 microprocessor based traffic signal controller the 66 ad 53x mitrac series has been manufactured by Phillips and evaluated at two sites in Wales. The flexibility of the controller, in which fixed-time plans held in the software can be altered by plugging in a hand-held teletype keyboard, enables it to be specified for any junction and, once the configuration is known the software can be produced in a few weeks. Thus bulk ordering of controllers and consequent cost saving is possible. Hard wired controllers can take over a year to produce and install. At present up to 16 traffic movements can be catered for with a planned development of up to 32. Power supply is monitored so that the system can be shut down in an orderly way if a failure is likely. A standby battery ensures that the contents of the ram are not corrupted. The software also checks the system every 100 ms to ensure that a fault does not cause a dangerous conflict at the junction. (TRRL)
