THE IMPACT OF RISING FUEL PRICES ON WEEKEND RECREATION TRIPS IN URBAN NEW SOUTH WALES
Approximately 750 households in Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong were surveyed to ascertain the effects of fuel price rises on their weekend recreation behaviour and the impact of possible future price rises. Attitudes to the "energy crisis" and government policy are also reported. Generally the impact of fuel price rises on weekend recreation travel over the past two years has been minor though there have been more notable effects in Wollongong and Newcastle than in Sydney. The major impact in all cities has been to reduce the frequency of such trips. If the price of fuel was to double by the end of 1982 then the tendency to make fewer trips will increase as will the likelihood of choosing a recreation destination closer to home (a).
