EXPERIENCE GAINED THROUGH TUNNEL INSTRUMENTATION

In this paper a description of data collected during the construction of an urban tunnel is given. The instrumented sections consist of two twin tunnels of 5.60 M diameter, built by use of shields of different types and precast reinforced concrete lining. The shape of the deflected ground surface on a transverse section and its time evolution is analyzed. Recorded measurements have permitted to evaluate, separately, the movements produced by the construction of each one of the tunnels. A reference to the influence of the different aspects related to the construction method, ground conditions, water level, etc, is made. Finally, a comparison between measured magnitudes and the theoretical ones, calculated by different methods, is made. The distortion of the lining due to pressure loads and other effects has been measured on instrumented rings inside the tunnel. Final comments on the purpose and results of this instrumentation program are made at the end of this communication. (TRRL)
