ALTERNATIVE FUELS
The Ford Motor Company is developing vehicles which will be powered by alcohol, propane, natural gas and electricity. Propane-powered trucks are being produced and will be sold in Canada as 1982 models and later in the U.S. It is estimated that propane use could save a car owner about $350 a year based on driving 12,000 miles. Other companies also have converted cars and trucks to propane use. Last year, 28,000 trucks were altered to use propane. General Motors has done good business selling diesel engines. GM plans to offer an electric commuter car and van as early as the 1985 model year.
