PROMISING LANTAU SCHEME

Outline plans are described for a project to link Hong Kong's largest island, Lantau, with the Kowloon mainland. A system of bridges will be used including one with a main span of 1413 M. The link with the island will provide a base for industrial development and an airport on Lantau. The main span of closed steel box construction will have to withstand winds gusting to 186 mph during typhoons. The main span, known as the Tsing Ma Bridge, is one of three forming the link. A conventional concrete box girder bridge will link Kowloon to Tsing-Yi Island and will then connect with the Tsing Ma Bridge to Ma Wan Island where a 486 M replica of the main bridge will link with Lantau. Traffic on the Tsing Ma Bridge will run on top and also inside the proposed structure. Four lanes of traffic will be carried on the upper deck while below will be a further two lanes with two outer tubes reserved for mass transit rail links with the projected airport on Lantau. (TRRL)
