THE MOST IMPORTANT TRANSPORT MODES SHOULD REMAIN THE BUS AND THE BICYCLE

BELANGRIJKSTE VERVOERMIDDELEN MOETEN BUS EN FIETS BLIJVEN

The whole development in the areas of physical planning, urban development, traffic and transport is based since the nineteen fifties on the idea that every Dutchman should have his own car. During the last ten years opinions have changed. When the cities are congested, people give more attention to the environment, the operating costs of the car become higher and higher, and alternative transport modes become more and more necessary. The authors present errors in policy which are made, as seen from their point of view. They give suggestions how to reverse the errors and to prevent them in new towns and residential areas. According to the authors the bicycle has to play a big role. The policy must be that the bicycle and public transport will remain the most important transport modes. (TRRL)
