INDICATORS FOR FUTURE CAR OWNERSHIP AND USE
Car ownership and use are affected by a variety of factors, both social and economic. Recent work in the U.K. has provided important insights into understanding variations in car ownership; however, rather less is known about car use in terms of average annual kilometres per car. A consideration of these factors reveals not only the potential for policy intervention but also the extent to which intervention currently takes place, by means of taxation and subsidies, and regulations. The future of the car lies very much in the hands of the policy-makers, who need a greater understanding of the effects that they can and do have. (Author/TRRL)
