DRUGS AND ROAD SAFETY
Drugs can be divided into several categories which differ considerably in their relationship to traffic safety. A very large number of drugs is available in Australia for prescription or to be bought over-the-counter, making the number of possible combinations very large. These are frequently combined with social euphoriants, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and cannabis, further complicating the issue. It is important to determine exactly which drugs are taken by drivers and whether they can be construed as increasing crash risk. Drug-alcohol interactions are considered in detail because they are now perceived as being highly important in technically developed countries (a). The number of the covering abstract of the conference is TRIS no 362131. (TRRL)
