EXPERIENCES DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF LARGE TUNNEL CROSS SECTIONS IN PARTIAL HEADINGS FOR THE UNDERGROUND RAILWAY OF MUNICH
ERFAHRUNGEN BEI DER ERSTELLUNG GROSSER TUNNELQUERSCHNITTE IN TEILVORTRIEBEN BEIM MUENCHNER U-BAHN-BAU
The paper describes the tunnel sections driven and the partial excavation method chosen to do the work. The reasons for choosing this particular excavation method are discussed. They include the fact that the tunnels are being built in young tertiary soil enclosing a series of strata of pressurized water bearing sand and of silty, clayey and often marly soil. The excavation areas are limited by the stand-up time and the often very different strength of the soil. Caused by the heterogeneous strata in many cases, a sufficient dewatering operation by drainage wells is impossible, even with the aid of vacuum installation. By means of partial drives and by drainage measures taken out of the galleries a satisfactory lowering of the residual groundwater is to be done. The driving in part-sections and an expedient sequence of the working stages enable gradually small ground movements with wide and flat depressions due to settlement in transverse and longitudinal section, causing no damage to the built-up area.
