IN NICE: A DYNAMIC INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR PASSENGERS AT BUS STOPS

A NICE : UN SYSTEME D'INFORMATION DYNAMIQUE DES USAGERS AUX ARRETS D'AUTOBUS

In order to predict the waiting time for a bus at peak hour, an information system for passengers was developed in Nice: the Videobus, a device installed at bus stations, which gives the position of buses. This system comprises a transmitter fitted on the bus, a detection beacon and an information panel located at the bus station. The detection beacon broadcasts continuously in a given geographic sector a question to which the bus replies when it enters the sector. The beacon can identify four different lines. At the reception of the message a light appears on all information panels downstream from the broadcasting beacon, the switching of the light corresponding to the detection point. The user can then locate the vehicle on the line and know how long he will have to wait. The use of this system in the town of Nice showed that it improved the comfort of the users enabling them to organize their waiting time and that it led to a better distribution of loads in buses at peak hour.
