IN-SITU PLANING OF RAIL PROLONGS SERVICE LIFE
By planning worn rail where it lies in the track, the profile can be restored without the expense of lifting it for removal to a workshop to be machined. Plasser & Theurer adapted a tamper/liner to carry out seven sequential cuts on both rails at 0.9 m/s, and British Rail plans to reprofiled some 90 km of rail this year. A particular advantage is that continuous-welded rail can be reprofiled without having to be cut and rewelded. Investigations are continuing to see whether planning is an effective means of removing corrugations.
