SOIL REINFORCING SYSTEMS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Four proprietary systems have been used in the United Kingdom up to now. These are the Vidal reinforced earth, the York system, developed by Jones, and the Websol system due to Price. The fourth system, developed by Jones and Netlon is based on the high tensile polymer "tensor geogrid". Each type of construction (which should comply with Tech Memo BE/78) is described and illustrated with examples. The Vidal system now uses cruciform shaped precast concrete facing units and high adherence ribbed strips reinforcement. Low weight hexagonal glass reinforced cement facing units are used for the York system. The soil reinforcement is in the form of strips on plastic grids. The Websol system incorporates reinforcement layers of permeable non-woven fabric combined with strips of paraweb. "Tensor geogrids" have been used in a gabion faced wall system utilised in the construction of approach embankments and wing walls to a bridge. Examples are given of other ad hoc systems which have been used for specific contracts. An outline is given of other soil reinforcing systems being developed in the United Kingdom. (TRRL)
