SHOPPER AND VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS AT LARGE RETAIL SHOPPING CENTRES

Various vehicle and shopper characteristics of large freestanding retail stores are examined and guidelines, based on results from several hypermarkets, supermarkets and superstores throughtout the UK, are suggested for the use of planning authorities. Out-of-town hypermarkets have different characteristics and the recommendations are related to supermarkets and superstores. It is suggested that there should be 11 parking spaces allocated per 100 sq.m. Of retail area, except where a filling station is included; in this case some 12 per cent of vehicles entering the car park were for petrol only. Results indicate that adverse weather conditions may result in higher parking demands. Average parking duration was found to range from 25 to 30 minutes at the supermarket to 45 minutes at A larger superstore; this duration increased by two minutes for every 100 shoppers in the store. It is likely that the daily visitation could be between 90 and 120 trips per 100 sq.m. Retail area, with three critical peak periods: Thursday 1800-1900h, Friday 1600-1700h and Saturday 1030-1130h, when between 12 and 15 per cent of the daily vehicle flow occurred. (TRRL)
