WELCOME TO NATIONAL EXPRESS TRAVEL INFORMATION SERVICE

A computer program known as PATHFINDER, designed to improve the dissemination of travel information, is described. Developed for the National Bus Company, the system incorporates an efficient pathbuilding algorithm which searches timetable information and selects all "reasonable" routes between pairs of origins and destinations. Unacceptable routes are eliminated by reference to user-controlled acceptance conditions. The system has been run on the 1300 services and 3000 stop locations of the National Express timetable. Routes have been built between 400 selected locations producing about 160000 a-z travel summaries. It is planned to develop the system so that it can be stored as a highly compressed database and create travel summary data using a Prestel-compatible viewdata television system. (TRRL)
