THE ROLE OF ALCOHOLIC STATE IN ROAD TRAFFIC IN HUNGARY
The Hungarian highway code emphasizes that it is an offence to drive a vehicle under the effect of any agent that influences driving abilities or if the body contains alcohol derived from spirits. In 1979, a new penal code was introduced. The penalties are more severe than earlier: in case of severe injury the upper limit of imprisonment is three years. If causing death, two to eight years, and a driver may get five to ten years in prison if his drinking causes an accident with more than two casualties. In spite of such severe regulations, however, driving under the influence of alcohol shows little if any decrease in Hungary. Some statistical data are presented. It is stressed that education is needed in order to reduce the incidence of drinking and driving. (TRRL)
