MODERN ELECTRIC COMMERCIAL VEHICLES LEARNING FROM IN-SERVICE EXPERIENCE
Initial research on electric vehicles led to the development of a 1-tonne payload electric van based on the Bedford CF. Appropriate choice of fleet- users, together with the support of a specialist service unit has resulted in very considerable and successful operator experience being gained, particularly through participation in the 'London goes electric' scheme. This has proved that the Lucas vehicles perform their required duties with adequate reliability, and they are liked by drivers. Several problems have arisen in service and these have led to modifications to the drive systems or are the subject of continuing development work. Practical experience is essential for the development of a successful drive system and further trials will continue in order that more operators will be able to evaluate the Lucas electric drive system.
